A place called Home

by: Montserrat Egan

What exactly is a house? A house is a building for humans to live in. Families usually live together in one. Now, what exactly is the difference between a house and a home? Home is an enjoyable, safe and loving place one can live in. The purpose of having a house is not only to live in it but to make a home out of it. Your surroundings can influence your lifestyle and it this case, your family.

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been in awe with interior design and architecture. For me, there are different feelings one can perceive whenever they are in different home styles. Happiness is perceived when there is a good first impression. Kitchens, living rooms or dining rooms, tend to be places where everyone gathers around. Whenever these places are filled with light, air, and elegance, you get a happy feel. Warm colors and textures are great for transmitting comfort. Whenever I’m in a room with these characteristics, I feel more relaxed and so does my family. Now, to get a romantic vibe, embracing a soft and touchable atmosphere it’s what I have felt that has truly done the job.

For me, you must have a good color scheme, not only because it looks nice but because there is a physiology behind it. According to Johann Wolfgang, author of the book “Theory of Everything”, brown representing color schemes is very grounding in accents and it associates with wood, organics, and stability. White based color schemes can be related to purity, goodness, and cleanliness. But to be honest, it shouldn’t be overused because it then can cause sterility or make you feel like you’re in a medical setting. White is great to make places feel open and elegant. Now, red and black are very powerful colors that shouldn’t be used as the dominant color. In my experience, it is better when these colors are used to accent rooms rather than when they are used to paint walls.

“An architect can control human behavior with his design by understanding the way that a building’s design can influence a person’s behavior, thus, modifying the individual’s mood and perception, whether the environment is natural or man-made.”

It should be noted that all these factors can have a big influence on the ambiance, but most importantly on how homy and cozy people feel when they gather around. Every Sunday, my family and I go to my grandma’s. There is a terrace on the outside which is decorated in grey, white and brown colors. It is open but at the same time, it is built in a certain way that makes you feel like you’re home. This place is where memories are made and where great food is prepared. Is where we decide to meet because of its simplicity that projects comfort and openness. For me, places that offer the possibility to be called home mean the world to me. With my 16 years of life, this is one of the most important lessons I’ve learned.
